In June 2025, an image circulated widely that appeared to depict a post from U.S. President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account threatening “decisive military action” unless Namibia terminated “all agreements with Russian state-linked entities within 24 hours.”
The claim spread to X (archived), but primarily circulated on multiple Facebook accounts (archived, archived, archived).
The full post visible in the image read:
The United States of America will no longer tolerate Russia’s predatory exploitation of Namibia’s resources and its attempts to destabilize Southern Africa through coercive energy deals. The oil discovered in Namibian territory belongs solely to the people of Namibia – not to Russian oligarchs, not to Putin’s regime. Regarding the proposed Russian-built nuclear power plant: This project is canceled. We are aware of Moscow’s true intentions – to use this facility as cover for intelligence operations and to threaten our strategic military presence in Botswana. The United States will not allow a hostile foreign power to establish a security risk so close to our allies.
If Namibia does not immediately terminate all agreements with Russian state-linked entities within 24 hours, the United States will have no choice but to take decisive military action to protect regional stability and American interests.
The earliest post sharing the image we found was from June 28, 2025, but it’s unclear whether this was the first instance of the image appearing on the internet. Dozens of users appeared to believe the post was authentic and decried the alleged U.S. intervention in African affairs.
The post was entirely fake; an account fabricated both the image and the claim for clicks.
Searching the keyword “Namibia” on Trump’s Truth — a public archive of Trump’s communications on his social media platform, Truth Social — yielded only one result: an announcement post from March 2025 about the nomination of John Giordano as the new U.S. ambassador to Namibia.
DuckDuckGo search results (archived) similarly yielded nothing related to the specific claim that Trump threatened military action if Namibia did not sever ties with Russian entities. No major media outlet covered the topic and the White House did not comment on such a policy.
The claim spread amid recent news of possible nuclear energy development in Namibiawhich has access to domestic uranium (archived).
