James Gunn reacts to fans thinking he cast Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman

James Gunn has seen those Wonder Woman casting rumors, and he’s setting the record straight.

Fans started speculating that Hit Man star Adria Arjona could be up for the major DC Universe role when they noticed that Gunn, who is co-head of DC Studios, followed her on Instagram.

“I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought]‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,’” Gunn said in a new interview with Extra when asked how much fans should read into who he follows on social media in order to gauge casting. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”

“But she was in a movie that I made seven years ago,” he added, referring to 2016’s The Belko Experiment. “We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her. People just notice these things all the time.”

Gunn previously confirmed in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the launch of Superman that a Wonder Woman movie is in development at DC.

“Wonder Woman‘s a separate thing” to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO/Max series, which is “slow moving, but it’s moving,” Gunn said at the time. “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman‘s being written right now.”

In a May 2025 earnings call with investors, David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, named Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman as critical characters to the superhero universe that Gunn and fellow DC Studios head Peter Safran are building across film and TV.

“I think that’s accurate, actually,” Gunn said of Zaslav’s comments. “I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.” Gunn also confirmed at the time he had not yet cast the role of Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot starred as Diana Prince in the previous era of DC films, first in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicethen in two Wonder Woman movies from director Patty Jenkins, as well as a Justice League movie, and cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash.

When Gunn and Safran were tapped to lead a new era at the studio, plans for a third outing with Gadot as the beloved superhero were ultimately scrapped. Further details on the new Wonder Woman entry, including a creative team, have not yet been revealed.
