McDonald’s, the United States’ largest fast food restaurant chain, is undeniably known for its trademark Big Mac. But back in 2006, McDonald’s added a new item to their menu: the Snack Wrap. The Snack Wrap was a hit in its early days, but like many greats, the Snack Wrap’s sales declined over time, and they were removed from most American stores in 2016. The final blow came at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when McDonald’s was forced to downsize their menu and get rid of the Snack Wrap for good. Or so they thought. The McDonald’s Snack Wrap returned to locations in the U.S. just yesterday, and I got a first look and taste.
How did the Snack Wrap come back?
As with many discontinued menu items, McDonald’s fans were outraged when it was announced that the Snack Wrap would no longer be available. Instagram user @bring_back_the_wrap even went so far as to post a picture of the Snack Wrap for 1,087 consecutive days until the franchise officially announced the item’s return, and then dedicated their account to a countdown until the Snack Wrap’s re-release.
The wrap was originally slated to return on the 14th of an undisclosed month in 2025, as hinted at by a cryptic post on the franchise’s social channels, but was re-released on July 10.
What’s new?
The original Snack Wrap was released in only one form: ranch and crispy chicken. Later, customers were given the option to change the ranch to honey mustard and the crispy chicken to grilled, but the variety ended there.
With the re-release, McDonald’s got rid of the grilled chicken but brought back its classic Ranch Snack Wrap. However, McDonald’s introduced a new flavor as its companion: spicy. Is spicy a flavor? Technically, no. But the franchise uses the same Spicy Pepper spread on the Spicy Snack Wrap as it does on its Spicy McCrispy, giving it a distinct McDonald’s kick.
Are the new Snack Wraps good?
I’m a big fan of McDonald’s chicken, so I had high standards for these wraps. Facing other franchises like Chick-fil-A and Burger King, among others, McDonald’s had pretty difficult competition. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
The Ranch Snack Wrap and the Spicy Snack Wrap are the perfect companions. One with a cool taste and one with a peppery punch, it makes sense that McDonald’s chose the two to pair for the re-release. And with each only having five simple components — chicken, lettuce, cheese, tortilla, and sauce — both wraps bring a nostalgic simplicity to the table.
While I enjoyed both wraps, I had a clear favorite. I love spicy food, so it was no surprise that I favored the Spicy Snack Wrap over the Ranch Snack Wrap. The Spicy Snack Wrap, quite simply, tastes exactly like a Spicy McChicken in a tortilla. The crispy chicken pairs perfectly with the spicy spread, offsetting the coolness of the lettuce, and is topped off perfectly with shredded cheese. The Ranch Wrap, although enjoyable, is overpowering. Ranch has a strong taste, but the wrap goes a bit too far, and the flavor overtakes that of the chicken instead of being a supportive addition.
Overall? I’d recommend these wraps, even if they weren’t perfect. My Ranch Snack Wrap might have overdone it on the sauce, but the possibility remains that it could’ve been a maker error. The Spicy Snack Wrap, in my opinion, was perfect. I’ll be returning to McDonald’s this summer to grab another wrap, and now, fanatics all around the US can too.
