Apple TV+ subscribers will soon get an exclusive look inside one of college basketball’s greatest dynasties. It’s a new three-part documentary series focused on the University of Connecticut (UCONN) women’s basketball program. The series chronicles four decades of unprecedented success under legendary head coach Geno Auriemma. That includes the team’s most recent triumph as 2025 NCAA National Champions, of course. No other team, men or women, has won so many championships — 12.
“This series offers fans an exclusive view into 40 seasons of UConn women’s basketball, and I’m really excited for audiences to be able to see all the hard work that has built this program,” Auriemma said.
The three-part documentary series doesn’t have a title or a streaming date yet, however.
Apple TV+ UCONN women’s basketball docuseries: 40 years of success with record 12 championships
As women’s college and pro basketball gains popularity, Apple’s latest investment in premium sports content brings together Emmy Award-winning director Matthew Hamachek (The Dynasty: New England Patriots, Tiger) and Emmy nominee Erica Sashin (Harry & Meghan). They tell the story of college basketball’s most dominant program, UCONN Huskies women’s basketball.
From mediocrity to dynasty
The transformation of UConn women’s basketball reads like a sports fairy tale. When Auriemma arrived in 1985, the program had managed just one winning season in its entire history. Fast-forward to 2025, and the Huskies have captured an unprecedented 12 national championships — more than any other team, men’s or women’s, in NCAA Division I basketball history.
The series will feature the iconic players who helped build this legacy. That includes well-known names like Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and current WNBA sensation Paige Bueckers, who was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. These athletes didn’t just win games. They revolutionized women’s basketball and became global ambassadors for the sport.
Behind-the-scenes access to championship season
What sets this documentary apart from typical sports retrospectives is its intimate access to UConn’s 2024-25 championship squad, Apple said. Viewers will get unprecedented behind-the-scenes footage of the team’s journey to their latest title, combined with archival material spanning four decades and in-depth interviews with key figures from the program’s history.
The series promises to reveal the demanding culture that Auriemma cultivated. It shows how his relentless work ethic and pursuit of perfection shaped multiple generations of players. Beyond the wins and championships, the documentary explores the personal struggles, historic rivalries and moments of vulnerability that defined this remarkable journey, Apple said.
Skydance Sports will produce the series, with additional executive production from Learfield Studios and Brillstein Creative Partners. While currently untitled, the series is already in production and expected to debut later this year.
