Two of Germany’s leading industry associations, UNITI Bundesverband EnergieMittelstand e.V. and Verband der Schmierstoff-Industrie e.V. (VSI), have unanimously approved a merger that will create a unified voice representing approximately 95% of the German lubricants market. The decision was made during the associations’ respective general assembly meetings.
The merger brings together UNITI’s market strength in fuels, heating, and lubricants distribution with VSI’s deep technical expertise in lubricants manufacturing. Together, the new entity will serve both small and medium-sized enterprises and global corporations operating in Germany and across Europe.
Founded in 1927, UNITI currently represents around 1,000 companies across Germany’s energy SME sector, including operators of roughly 8,600 fuel stations—about 62% of the national network—and suppliers serving 20 million people in the heating oil market. Prior to the merger, UNITI’s members accounted for approximately 50% of Germany’s lubricant sales.
VSI, established in 1947, has evolved from a supply group for grease manufacturers into the technical authority of the German lubricants industry, representing specialised SMEs and multinationals alike.
The integration is set to enhance the political and regulatory impact of both associations by consolidating their knowledge and networks. It is also expected to offer members stronger support on complex issues including sustainability, technological innovation, and standardisation.
Describing the move as a “historic milestone,” VSI Chairman Dr. Peter Seifried said the merged entity will be better equipped to navigate transformation in the energy, mobility and lubricants sectors. UNITI Chairwoman Christine Keslar-Thunder added that the synergies gained through the merger will allow for broader, more efficient support for members and increase the association’s ability to influence policy.
The merger will be formalised under the name UNITI Bundesverband EnergieMittelstand e.V. by the fourth quarter of 2025. In the meantime, both organisations are actively working to align their structures and operations.
