JoJo Siwa is reflecting on her personal journey with coming out as part of the LGBTQ+ community, but has some regrets.
In a recent interview with the Daily Mail’s YOU MagazineSiwa opened up about her coming out story as a teenager, saying that she initially described herself as pansexual, which is defined as being attracted to people despite gender or sexuality. At 22, Siwa expressed some regret over defining herself.
“When I came out at 17, I said: ‘I’m pansexual, because I don’t care [about gender].’ But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: ‘I’m a lesbian.’ And I think I did that because of pressure,” Siwa said.
Siwa started opening up about her sexuality in 2021 when she was 17 after she wore a “Best Gay Cousin Ever” shirt, leaving fans to speculate that she was queer. Initially, she didn’t have an answer about her identity and instead said, “The reason I’m not going to say this answer is because I don’t really know this answer.” Siwa later made her red carpet debut with her girlfriend at the time, Kylie Prew.
But now, Siwa, who is now dating former Celebrity Big Brother co-star Chris Hughes, said that a lot of the pressure she felt came from “inside the [LGBTQ] community at times.”
“From people I know, from partners I’ve had,” said Siwa. “You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, ‘Oh, I’m a lesbian,’ you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid.’”
While on Celebrity Big BrotherJoJo Siwa clarified that she felt more queer. “I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, and I think being here I’ve realized: ‘Oh, I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer.’ And I think that’s really cool.”
