As Dexter: Resurrection barrels toward its long-awaited premiere with Michael C. Hall’s vigilante killer officially back in action, there’s more going on behind the scenes than just Dexter Morgan’s return. Collider’s Steve Weintraub sat down with showrunners Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds to get the exclusive scoop on the untitled Trinity Killer prequel series — and fans of John Lithgow’s chilling antagonist will be pleased to know the scripts are ready. All ten of them. “It’s completely written,” said Phillips. “John Lithgow has agreed to do the voice, to narrate it, but it is not picked up yet. We’re hoping that with the success of Resurrection, and Original Sin has just been picked up, that Chris McCarthy and the Paramount people will want to expand the Dexterverse. But it has not been picked up yet.” Reynolds noted that it was a “hell of a good story, though,” while Phillips added that it was “beautifully written,” despite the lack of green light from Paramount. Both confirmed they had 10 scripts written and ready to go. That’s right — ten fully written episodes of what could be the Dexter universe’s next big hit are just sitting in wait. While it hasn’t officially been greenlit yet, the creative team is clearly confident, especially with Lithgow not only signed on but narrating the story himself.
Is the Trinity Killer in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’?
This all comes as Lithgow returns to the Dexter franchise in Resurrection, despite his character being very much dead. In an earlier interview with Variety, Lithgow confirmed the Trinity Killer’s return would be brief, noting:
“I just went back to do a day. They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of Dexter. And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed.”
Whether or not we’ll see more of Trinity in Dexter’s nightmares remains to be seen, but the fact that a full-on prequel is written — and narrated by Lithgow — is a promising development. It suggests that Paramount+ and Showtime are serious about growing the Dexterverse. As for Resurrection, the cast is stacked. Alongside Hall, fans can expect appearances from Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, David Dastmalchian, Eric Stonestreet, and more. Cameras began rolling back in January, and we’re just days away from seeing Dexter Morgan on our screens again. Dexter: Resurrection premieres on Showtime on July 11, 2025.
