Some of Coogler’s other films are riding the success of Sinners, leading to arguably his most emotional film ever earning a spot at the top of streaming charts. Coogler’s most recent film before Sinners was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the 2018 smash hit led by Chadwick Boseman. The sequel did not return Boseman due to his tragic passing in 2020, but it did honor his legacy not only as Black Panther but also as an inspiring performer. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently streaming on Disney+, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform in America at the time of writing. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was extremely well-received by both critics and audiences upon release. The film earned a “certified fresh” 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and even a “verified hot” 94% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed $859 million at the box office to turn a profit off its $250 million budget. Black Panther 2 was nominated for five Oscars, including Angela Bassett even received recognition for her final performance as Queen Ramonda. She ultimately didn’t win the award — it went to Jamie Lee Curtis for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once — but the decision remains controversial to this day. Wakanda Forever even took home the award for Best Costume Design, and it was also nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Song, and Best Visual Effects. Coogler also wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole.
