Director Kitty Green burst onto the scene with her claustrophobic drama The Assistant, which is regarded as one of the best movies to have been made about the #MeToo movement. It starred Julia Garner as an assistant to a monstrous Hollywood movie producer who runs his company with an iron fist. Green and Garner reunited on the similarly fiery thriller The Royal Hotel, which debuted in 2023. The movie received terrific reviews, but didn’t make much of an impact at the box office. It’s now making its presence felt on the Netflix viewership charts. According to FlixPatrol, The Royal Hotel finished 10th on Netflix on July 8, earning a total of 98 points. It’s playing mainly in the Middle East and in various French-speaking territories across the world, including France and Morocco. The Royal Hotel holds an excellent 89% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “A chilling immersion into a place and time fraught with constant danger, The Royal Hotel reunites Kitty Green and Julia Garner to electrifying effect.” However, the audience’s response was less enthusiastic; they awarded the movie a disappointing 36% score on the aggregator website. In her review, Collider’s Isabella Soares wrote that the “feminist thriller does more to show the challenges that women face than to create fully developed characters. Although the film does end with a bang, these missteps leading up to the resolution make the final scene bittersweet.” The Royal Hotel follows two young American women who show up to earn some extra cash at a bar in the middle of nowhere in Australia. They slowly discover that they aren’t exactly in the safest of places, and are stuck with no help in sight and local predators circling. The movie also features Hugo Weaving in a particularly scary role.
Garner’s Career Has Taken Off
Garner broke out with a supporting role in Netflix’s Ozark, and more recently headlined the Paramount+ film Apartment 7A, a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby. She also played the lead role in the Netflix series Inventing Anna, and a supporting role in the horror reboot Wolf Man. Next, she’ll play the iconic Silver Surfer in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is gearing up for release later this month. You can watch The Royal Hotel domestically on Hulu, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
