
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the whole country is shocked by the unfortunate incident related to Air India flight number AI-171 and all the citizens of the country are standing in solidarity with the families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. Mr. Shah said that on behalf of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the Prime Minister, they express deep condolences to all those who have lost their lives.
The Home Minister said that soon after receiving the information of the accident, the Gujarat government alerted all the disaster management units including the Health Department, Fire Department, Police Department and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of the Government of India and all the agencies started relief and rescue operations together. The Government of India and the Gujarat governments are jointly engaged in relief and rescue operations.
Mr. Amit Shah said that a total of 230 passengers and 12 crew members were aboard the aircraft, including domestic and international passengers. The Home Minister met the injured in the accident in the hospital. He said that the official number of the dead will be announced only after the DNA investigation is completed. The process of DNA sampling of the relatives who reached the spot will also be completed in the next 2-3 hours. Mr. Shah said that the families of the deceased passengers living abroad have already been informed and their DNA samples will be taken on reaching India.
