Three apprehended, including minor, for gold earring thefts targeting children in Shillong

Shillong, June 22: Mawlai Police have apprehended three individuals, including a 16-year-old girl, in connection with the recent thefts of gold earrings from two minor girls in Shillong. The arrests follow two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) filed on June 18 and June 20, detailing the brazen daylight robberies.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, on Sunday identified the arrested as a 16-year-old female child in conflict with the law (CCL), Mabanker Jyrwa (23) from Jaiaw, Lansonalane, and Charles Myrthong (20) of Riatsamthiah.

“The stolen articles have been recovered, on being led by the CCL and accused from Mawbah, New Oscar Jewellers Shop, and seized accordingly,” SP Syiem said and informed that the stolen earrings have been recovered.

The first incident, reported by Elinda Marbaniang, a resident of Mawlai Nongkwar Block, occurred on June 18, 2025, between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. Her 9-year-old daughter was walking home from school when a female suspect approached her on the footpath steps at Wahumkhrah. The suspect initially engaged the child by asking if she knew an “Adrian” in Class III. After the child responded negatively, the female followed her to Mawlai Nongkwar Block-2, where she forcefully removed an earring from the girl’s ear before fleeing.

Just two days later, on June 20, 2025, another FIR was filed by Sumardiam Kharlukhi of Mawlai Nonglum. She reported that between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM, three unknown persons — one female and two males — approached her house while her 9-year-old daughter was playing outside. The female suspect then forcefully cut off the child’s right earring before the trio fled the scene.

Mawlai Police launched an immediate investigation into both incidents, leading to the apprehension of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen items.
